چکیده

Cluster Deletion and Cluster Editing ask to transform a graph by at most k edge deletions or edge edits, respectively, into a cluster graph, i.e., disjoint union of cliques. Equivalently, a cluster graph has no conflict triples, i.e., two incident edges without a transitive edge. We solve the two problems in time O∗(1.415k) and O∗(1.76k), respectively. These results round off our earlier work by considerably improved time bounds. For Cluster Deletion we use a technique that cuts away small connected components that do no longer contribute to the exponential part of the time complexity. As this idea is simple and versatile, it may lead to improvements for several other parameterized graph problems. The improvement for Cluster Editing is achieved by using the full power of an earlier structure theorem for graphs where no edge is in three conflict triples.

Cluster editing with locally bounded modifications

Given an undirected graph G = (V,E) and a nonnegative integer k, the NPhard Cluster Editing problem asks whether G can be transformed into a disjoint union of cliques by modifying at most k edges. In this work, we study how “local degree bounds” influence the complexity of Cluster Editing and of the related Cluster Deletion problem which allows only edge deletions. We show that even for graphs ...

Alternative Parameterizations for Cluster Editing

Given an undirected graph G and a nonnegative integer k, the NP-hard Cluster Editing problem asks whether G can be transformed into a disjoint union of cliques by applying at most k edge modifications. In the field of parameterized algorithmics, Cluster Editing has almost exclusively been studied parameterized by the solution size k. Contrastingly, in many real-world instances it can be observe...

Efficient Parameterized Preprocessing for Cluster Editing

In the Cluster Editing problem, a graph is to be changed to a disjoint union of cliques by at most k operations of edge insertion or edge deletion. Improving on the best previously known quadratic-size polynomial-time kernelization, we describe how a crown-type structural reduction rule can be used to obtain a 6k kernelization bound.

Parameterized Algorithmics for Network Analysis: Clustering & Querying

Preface This thesis summarizes some of my results on NP-hard graph problems that have applications in the areas of network clustering and querying. The research for obtaining these results was Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), as a researcher in the DFG project " Parameterized Algorithmics for Bioinformatics " (PABI, NI 369/7). I want to express my gratitude to Rolf Niedermeier for giving me the op...

Going Weighted: Parameterized Algorithms for Cluster Editing

The goal of the Cluster Editing problem is to make the fewest changes to the edge set of an input graph such that the resulting graph is a disjoint union of cliques. This problem is NP-complete but recently, several parameterized algorithms have been proposed. In this paper we present a surprisingly simple branching strategy for Cluster Editing. We generalize the problem assuming that edge inse...
